Alternatives to custom GPTs

OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs. Your instructions are not lost: you can keep using them in ChatGPT or take them to another assistant.

What OpenAI has announced

  • Custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on 11 December 2026. For Enterprise workspaces with an approved deferral, the date is 11 February 2027.
  • Existing GPTs keep working until then. Your past conversations stay accessible afterwards too.
  • If you created a GPT, you can migrate it to a plugin: the instructions become a skill, knowledge files become reference files.
  • Custom actions and the selected model do not carry over.
  • For Enterprise workspaces, OpenAI plans to end the creation of new GPTs on 26 October 2026.

Your options

  • Stay in ChatGPT

    Migrate your GPT to a plugin from My GPTs once your account offers it. Or create a project and paste the instructions as project instructions; projects are available on all plans.

  • Claude

    Create a project, paste the instructions and add your knowledge files. Save recurring workflows as a skill.

  • Gemini

    Save your instructions as a skill or add a SKILL.md file. According to Google, Gems on personal Google accounts automatically become skills from November 2026.

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot

    At work you can add your own skills in Copilot Cowork. For larger agents connected to company data there is Copilot Studio.

  • Automatic with a trigger

    If your GPT used actions to talk to other services, an agent builder such as n8n, Make or Zapier Agents is often the better replacement.

How to move a GPT

  1. Open your GPT in edit mode and copy the instructions into a text file.
  2. Get the original files you uploaded as knowledge ready.
  3. Write down three typical questions and the answers you expect.
  4. Set up the replacement: plugin, project or skill. Add the instructions and files.
  5. Test with your three questions and adjust the instructions until the answers are right.

Tip: turn your instructions into a skill

A skill is a SKILL.md file with a name, a description and instructions. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft 365 Copilot can load such files. That way you write your instructions once and use them in several assistants.
