An AI watermark is an invisible mark in images, text, audio or video that shows the content was generated with AI.
Example
A checking tool finds a hidden signal in a photo and reports “likely AI-generated”.
For pros
A well-known example is SynthID from Google DeepMind. Related, but not a watermark in the strict sense, are signed provenance details under C2PA (Content Credentials). Watermarks can be weakened by editing; a missing watermark does not prove content is real. The EU AI Act requires providers of generative AI to mark outputs in a machine-readable way (Art. 50).
