Under the EU AI Act, high-risk AI systems can pose a significant risk to health, safety or fundamental rights, for example because they help decide on job applications or loans or are a safety component of a product. Strict rules apply to them.
Example
Software that pre-sorts job applications or a credit scoring system can be high-risk AI.
For pros
High-risk areas are listed in Annex III (e.g. employment, education, creditworthiness) or follow from product safety law (Annex I). Obligations include risk management, data quality, documentation, human oversight and accuracy. After the 2026 amendment, the rules apply from 2 December 2027 or 2 August 2028.
